Salt Printing Workshop with Stuart Kuhn and P. Daskarolis
Details and Registration:
One-to-one classes running monthly
Salt Printing with Stuart Kuhn and P. Daskarolis - a one day hands-on workshop covering early wet-process photographic printing
In the 1830s Henry Fox Talbot developed chemical formulas to make positive prints from paper negatives. Called salt prints because of their principle constituent sodium chloride, they became the dominant photographic medium alongside their glossier sibling, the albumen print
During this workshop you will coat chemical solutions onto high quality paper and use an enlarged negative (produced from your own image) to make an exposure. Once printed out this image will be fixed and washed to produce a print shown in some cases to last as long as 150 years. You will be given the general history of the process alongside other early photographic methods (such as daguerreotype and chrysotype) and you will be shown the minimal yet necessary safety precautions. You will also be given guidance on further research into salt printing should you wish to gain experience and achieve a higher level of control
This fun, safe and educational day will be suitable for all levels of experience. By the end of the session you will be in a position to consider making future prints for exhibition
Your only requirement will be to provide four digital files, from which two will be selected to produce digital negatives
Workshop times and dates to suit
